The World’s Healthiest Diets – guest infographic from Medigo.com
Today I am bringing you an interesting infographic originally published at www.medigo.com/blog which is being shared at their request. This infographic (embedded below) sums up the traditional diets from two areas with high concentrations of centenarians: the Mediterranean and Okinawa.
Here is a quote from the blog introducing the infographic:
The traditional Japanese and Mediterranean diets are often considered to be the healthiest in the world, with proven links to increased life expectancy. A number of studies in recent years have confirmed that both diets are directly linked to a reduced risk of numerous diseases. So what’s the secret?
Both diets couldn’t be more different when it comes to ingredients, preparation and flavour, but they both share the same key nutrients which can help us to live longer and healthier lives. Whether it’s ramen or paella, hummus or sushi, the Japanese and Mediterranean diets are both packed full of the same essential goodness we need every day. And they’re both delicious!
This infographic explores the nutrients which make these diets so powerful, the dishes in which they can be found and the practical steps you can take towards healthier eating habits.
Are these still the healthiest diets?
The short answer is yes, they are among the healthiest in the world, when practiced traditionally. What is unfortunate is that both regions are now becoming westernized and those who eat in the traditional manner in these areas are on the decline.
I discuss this more in this prior post on Living to 100 – Surprising Secret to the Okinawa Diet Revealed. There may yet be other candidates out there for the title of healthiest, but many of them are somewhat new to the diet scene (Paleo, Ketogenic, Vegan) although they all have some tribal hunter-gatherer roots. Only the passage of time may tell whether the traditional Mediterranean and Okinawan diets have competition for their ranking.
Enjoy the infographic – both of these diets can be researched in more depth with a Google search if you find them intriguing.
