The holiday has come and gone – did a few extra pounds come with it?
I know I put on a few pounds over the last few weeks, and so it is time to get back to my basics and start eating my normal whole foods diet. This can be easier said than done, because we do get used to “treating ourselves” with foods we usually avoid.
One of my favorite strategies to combat this issue is by “treating” myself to a delicious and healthy alternative to the processed sugar laden foods we ate which were so delicious. This can satisfy that mental craving you have developed while still keeping you on a healthier whole foods track.
Baked Blueberry Donuts
I am linking below to a recipe for Baked Blueberry Donuts recently published by Isabel De Los Rios, a certified holistic nutritionist and certified exercise specialist, at her website beyonddiet.com. Isabel was my original inspiration in my own weight loss journey and I still follow her and belong to her community all these years later.
These are the ingredients you will find in this recipe:
- flour, spelt, whole-grain, organic
- honey, raw, unfiltered, organic
- sea salt, unrefined and pure
- baking powder, organic, gluten & aluminum-free
- baking soda, pure
- cinnamon, ground, organic
- egg, omega-3, cage-free, organic
- yogurt, greek, plain, full-fat, plain, organic
- vanilla extract, organic
- blueberries, fresh, organic
It does not get healthier than that! This is also a reasonably simple recipe to make with a total preparation and cook time of around 20 minutes.
A quick word of caution: This is not a grain-free recipe as spelt is a gluten grain. If you are sensitive or on a gluten-free diet you may need to look for a non-gluten flour substitute such as almond or coconut flour.
Give this recipe a try for something which has a sweeter taste, reminds you of its unhealthy relatives, and can bring you back to the whole foods diet you want to enjoy. While we think of dishes like this at breakfast, I suspect it may last refrigerated for a few days if you want to try and keep some around for the occasional small meal or snack.
