Being “on a diet” is a recipe for eventual failure
Counting the number of diets I have tried in my years would take more than just my fingers. My life prior to 2010 was a succession of losing weight on one diet after another only to yo-yo the weight back on again once I returned to the old habits. You can see more about this on the My Story page of this website if you are interested.
I now believe that lifestyle changes are the real key to health and weight management. Quantity of food does matter, but I also think quality of your food choices plays a huge role as well in terms of the health aspect of that equation. Counting calories is not the answer – your metabolism is a moving target which changes constantly in response to the various stimuli received by the body – I placed a link below titled The Energy Balance Equation which discusses this concept in very convincing detail.
There are links below to fifteen of my blog posts highlighting articles published by Precision Nutrition. Since many of you will not want to invest the time in one sitting to read through all fifteen, I have placed them in order from top to bottom so you can read the ones first which will be the most immediately helpful in terms of understanding what sustainable and healthy lifetime weight management really looks like. This is an opportunity for you to look at your goals for your health, weight, and body composition in a whole new way. What this boils down to is this. Most weight loss plans are cookie cutter, “do this – don’t do that” instructions. It’s basically “here is the formula, now do it”. I wrote a post a while back titled precision-nutrition-18-ways-to-lose-your-first-10-pounds which discusses how your logical brain cannot possibly control your emotional brain over the long term. I encourage you to read it to understand this concept, as this is the true reason most diets fail in the long run.
You see, you are given a program to follow but not the skills to be successful at it. This is backwards from what I now believe and coach. To reach your goals you need to have have the necessary skill sets which support incremental progress until you have achieved them. To create those skill sets you need daily practices which bring you to habits which are more or less automatic, thereby improving on that skill set day by day for a few weeks until it is yours for the rest of your life. To put this in terms of the discussion above, your habits become your emotional brain and you do not need the logical brain (willpower) to make sure you do them.
So, build the skills and you build the practices / habits automatically, once the habits are in place you will reach and maintain your goals. This will not be done quickly, but it can be done in a way which is much easier than you may think as long as you can commit to the process for the necessary time to create the skill sets you need. My own partnership with Precision Nutrition
I have been certified by Precision Nutrition as a Level One Nutrition Coach for two years now. I decided I wanted to pursue this certification after reading their blogs for several years. I was so impressed with how they approach the way they coach their clients, helping them achieve both changed lifestyles and some pretty impressive body transformation results. I wanted to help my own clients in the same way, as in the end that is the entire goal of the enterprise represented by this website and blog.
I am licensed to use their coaching software to offer to my own clients, and I hope you will consider joining the program.
