You know what cellulite looks like, but you may not know what it is exactly.
As fat cells compile and extend beneath skin, they push against connective tissue, as a result an uneven orange peel like appearance called cellulite takes place.
Cellulite is “usually found on the hips, thighs, buttocks and back of arms”, says osteopathic physician Robert A. Kominiarek, DO.
However, you don’t have to keep staying inside during swimsuit season or avoiding clingy clothing, trying to hide your cellulite away.
New research suggests that lifestyle choices like foods and exercise can help get rid of those unsightly dimples for good.
Simple tweaks such as adding the right type of food and drink to your diet can help reduce cellulite dramatically. You CAN eat your way to a smoother and fuller looking body through these nutritious choices.
Here are some foods you should eat to get rid of cellulite.
Foods to get rid of Cellulite
This healthy option will definitely help you get rid of cellulite. According to Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City, “salmon is rich in antioxidants, which break down fat cells in cellulite”.
The omega-3 fatty acids contained within salmon “reduce appetite and low-level inflammation and repair and strengthen skin tissue and fibers,” says Lori L. Shemek, PhD, a certified nutritional consultant in the Dallas area.
This results in a decrease in the build-up of toxins inside blood vessels andimproves the flow of blood. As a result the waste captured in your connective tissue that push against the skin filters out.
2) Sunflower seeds
“They’re the new nuts”, says nutritionist Rania Batayneh, author of the forthcoming The One Diet. Sunflower seeds are a very good source of vitamin E, potassium and zinc, as well as vitamin B6, a lump-fighter.
“Not only does B6 help metabolize proteins that strengthen and repair connective tissue,” says Batayneh, “but it’s also a natural diuretic, eliminating excess water and bloating that can make cellulite more visible.”
3) Chili and Cayenne Peppers
“These peppers’ vitamin B6 restores and fortifies connective tissue, making them an excellent weapon in fighting unwanted dimpling”, says Batayneh.

Blackberries and blueberries stimulate the production of collagen, hence creating new skin tissue, says Dr. Shemek. This helps in improving the skin’s tone and texture.

The question now arises, why not coffee instead? It’s because the higher amounts of caffeine contained in coffee dehydrate you to a higher degree. This results in your body holding on to liquids and toxins that expand fat under the skin.
6) Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple Cider Vinegar is not only amazing for mixing into salad dressing and juice. It has so many applications for general health and wellbeing.
This vinegar’s potassium, magnesium and calcium “flush out toxins and relieve water retention around the thighs and stomach,” says Dr. Shemek.
The result: reduced bloating and cellulite. “Flushing out toxins also helps flush out stress hormones, detox your liver and rebalance estrogen production, which contribute to reducing or reversing cellulite,” she adds.
Moreover, apple cider vinegar might also help you lose weight (which can affect cellulite indirectly).
7) Olive Oil
“One major mistake all women make: fearing fat,” says Stella Metsovas, a clinical nutritionist in California. Olive oil supplies the body with not-so-heavily-processed monounsaturated fats and polyphenols which help to keep your thyroid healthy.
A properly functioning thyroid enhances metabolism, burns fat and stimulates skin-building cells—all things that reduce fat cell expansion (and thicken skin to cover the dents). “Cook olive oil at low temperatures and drizzle it on fiber-rich vegetables throughout the day” for the biggest benefits, Metsovas adds.
8) Dark Chocolate
Good news for chocoholics! You don’t have to let go of your favorite sweet for smoother and firmer skin. “Natural cocoa is full of antioxidants, which break down fat in cellulite and improve the function of all cells, including skin-building ones”, says Karst.
The limited amounts of caffeine help by dehydrating fat cells under skin, which further helps to even out the surface. Karst recommends satisfying your sweet tooth with 1 square or ounce of at least 80% dark chocolate per day to metabolize fat and help keep your skin dimple-free.
Consumed for over thousands of years, this healthy spread is a low-glycemic food, which means your body can use it readily for energy, “resulting in smaller fat cells and a decreased appearance of or prevention of cellulite,” says Dr. Kominiarek.
Although there’s no specific component of hummus that eliminates cellulite, the food adds only a minute amount of glucose into the blood, which results in minimum insulin release.
As insulin is a fat storage hormone, eating low-glycemic foods results in the prevention of fat cell expansion and hence can cause a decrease in the production of cellulite.
Spice up your meals for a fat-stimulating effect. “Saffron contains anti-inflammatory ingredients that discourage fat cell expansion,” says Alan Roberts, PhD.
Only a couple oz. of saffron in the form of spice or liquid can curb your appetite and increase the flow of blood between tissues.
“Boosting circulation can reduce cellulite by increasing muscle tone under the skin, eliminating the valleys on the surface and creating a stronger, smoother look”, he says.
Dr. Robert suggests that in order to enjoy a healthy meal, you can sprinkle some saffron onto avocado wedges, or add it to your favorite salad dressing or sauce.
This herb not only takes your taste buds south of the border but also promotes detoxification by helping to remove heavy metals from the body (these heavy metals tend to hide in fat cells).
These heavy metals can disturb normal tissue function and, as a result, prevent your body from recovering and functioning properly. Reduction in the overall toxins in your body may also aid in getting rid of the excess stored fat, which can help reduce the production of cellulite.

It is a risk factor for developing type 2 Diabetes and there are chances of it damaging your teeth as well. White sugar also acidifies the blood and depletes the body of minerals, like calcium, leaving the teeth and bones even weaker.
Here are a few alternatives to white sugar that may be beneficial for you to consume instead:
- Brown sugar
- Cane sugar
- Maple syrup
- Agave nectar
- Grain molasses (from rice, barley, etc.)
- Natural Fruit syrups (from apples, pears, etc.)
2) Fried foods
Fried foods are high in fat content and in a lot of cases, the fat present in them is of low quality.
Whenever you heat fat to a very high temperature, toxic substances are created which the body tends to store in areas that are far away from the important organs in order to avoid any risks.
Instead of frying try to grill, steam, bake, sauté, or cook in a wok.
3) Alcoholic beverages
Alcoholic beverages do not cause cellulite in themselves, but they do constrict blood vessels in the skin, which can make cellulite worse. They also contain “empty calories”, which can further result in weight gain.
Alcoholic beverages don’t provide any nutrients and when the body metabolizes them, they are turned into sugar.
Alcoholic beverages also enhance fluid retention and increase fat deposits in some specific areas (the thighs, arms, abdomen and buttocks).
Instead of drinking alcoholic beverages, we recommend drinking natural juices, infusions, or if you don’t like those, then simply water.
4) Junk Food
Junk food can include pastries, hamburgers, french fries, sandwiches, sauces, pre-cooked foods, etc.
These foods are certainly the worst foods for cellulite. Junk food generally contains refined flour, sugar, refined salt and trans fat which can be very harmful for overall health.
Junk Food has also been known to increase the risk of suffering from coronary diseases. By consuming junk food, the body does not receive the nutrients it needs and these nutrients are sent directly to the “reserves”, which is to say, stored fat and cellulite.
These foods do not efficiently satisfy your hunger, they do exactly the opposite. Huge amounts of calories are often required for it to feel like it’s enough. Due to the salt, sugar, and artificial flavoring used, they often create addictive effects which naturally make you want to eat more.
The increased caloric intake can eventually lead to people being overweight which enhances cellulite production.
5) Processed meats and cheeses
A standard serving of ready to eat meat packs up to 790 milligrams of sodium—a third of the daily recommended intake. Most people stack their bread with far more meat than what’s considered to be “healthy”.
And processed cheese is just as harmful as processed meat for the body. “High sodium foods like deli meats, bacon and cheeses cause water retention,” explains Haase. “And that bloating and extra water weight can make cellulite more visible.”
What you should eat instead:
Fortunately, you don’t have to throw away your favorite sandwich ingredients to get smoother skin. Instead, shop in a smarter way: “Look for low-sodium versions of these foods, eat plenty of hydrating fruits and vegetables and be sure to sip water continuously throughout the day,” says Haase.
Staying hydrated will flesh out your skin, making cellulite less visible.
